Engage in deep, real talk, meaningful discussions about race (and other intersecting identities) that center the stories and experiences of Black, Indigenous, and non-Black people of color
Learn how to notice, name, and dismantle the systems of structural racism and white supremacy that have historically impacted and continue to impact our culture and organizations…basically...all the stuff we should have been taught in school…but weren’t…
Practice the skills of being anti-racist in our personal and professional lives
Collaborate on hella dope projects and campaigns designed to advocate for racial justice and amplify your story as an anti-racist brand
Share knowledge, tools, tips, and resources for using our platforms to advocate for racial justice at scale
Call each other in, hold each other accountable, and cheer each other on
Why we are a multiracial community
We are very intentionally creating this space for folks of all races who are committed to racial justice to come together for support, shared learning, and accountability. We are doing this because we believe that we can actually dismantle the systems of structural racism and white supremacy marginalize, exclude, exploit, and harm Black, Indigenous, and Non-Black People of Color (NBPOC). We believe that it takes all of us to make this happen. We believe that these systems don’t just harm Black, Indigenous, and NBPOC. We believe that these systems have deeply impacted our entire planet in ways that threatened all of humanity and our living relations.
At the same time, we are fully aware of the fact that we are all on different points along the Racial Justice Spectrum. Those of us who identify with the most marginalized groups have likely spent our whole lives noticing, naming, navigating, and attempting to heal from the effects of these harmful systems. Those of us who identify with the most dominant groups have had the privilege of seeing their stories and experiences reflected back to them as they navigate these same systems. They may just be beginning to notice the harm that has been caused and to explore their role in working towards justice.
Choosing Discomfort Over Harm
Because we are on different points of the Racial Justice Spectrum in The Hella Community, we will always do our best to recognize and even celebrate the inevitable discomfort involved in this work while mitigating and eliminating harm.
Harm and discomfort are not the same.
Discomfort is an essential element of growth. We all experience discomfort when we push ourselves into unknown territory. When we exercise new muscles. When we look our fear and shame right in the face and more forward anyway. When we challenge ourselves to do things we never thought possible. Being uncomfortable in spaces that support our learning and development is a natural part of the process.
Harm, on the other hand, is something we as a community can work together to reduce and heal from. In this work, harm is caused when folks who are still early in the process (i.e. white folks) are not able to understand or believe the stories and experiences of marginalized folks, when they center themselves and their comfort, and act from their own assumptions and biases. Harm is caused when we proactively and aimlessly disrespect each other’s boundaries. Harm is caused whenever we wield our power in a way that negates someone else’s humanity.
In The Hella Community, we will always choose discomfort over harm. Every single time.
“Being part of The Hella Community means…
…I always have a community of partners in strategizing how to build a more equitable business environment.”
